How Much Pipe Does a One-Decare Field Need?

Ertunç Plastik Technical Content Team4 min read

One decare, known as a dönüm in Türkiye, is 1,000 m². Area alone does not determine the pipe length required. Row direction, row spacing, lines per row, the distribution main and the distance to the water source must be calculated separately.

Why is area in decares not enough on its own?

Rectangles measuring 20 × 50 metres and 10 × 100 metres both cover 1,000 m², but their row lengths, turns and distribution-main routes differ. Paths that are not irrigated, structures and boundary clearances also affect the net irrigated area.

This guide is for planning purchasing quantities. Pump selection, dripper flow rate, irrigation duration or required pipe diameter cannot be determined by this calculation alone. For a hydraulic project, information such as source, elevation and working pressure is required.

How to find the number of rows and line length?

First choose which field edge the rows will run parallel to. Deduct the clearances at both ends from each row length. Establish the usable field width and row spacing, and show the positions of the first and last rows explicitly on the layout.

In this example, the first and last rows are half a row spacing from the boundaries. A width of 20 metres with 1 metre row spacing gives 20 rows. For a field length of 50 metres, deducting 1 metre at each end leaves 48 metres per row.

Example InputValueEffect on the Calculation
Area20 × 50 m1,000 m²
Row spacing1 m20 rows; half-spacing boundary clearances
Clearance at each end1 + 1 m48 m of usable row length
Lines per row120 × 48 = 960 m of row pipe

Add main distribution and supply pipe separately

The example total of 960 metres covers the row lines only. For distribution from one side, adding a 20 metre distribution main and a 15 metre route to the water source gives a geometric total of 995 metres. Actual turns and connection allowances must be measured separately.

Row lines and the distribution main may require different products. Keep their quantities, coil lengths and diameters separate when ordering. Assess the polyethylene pipes in the Ertunç Plastik catalogue against each line's role and the verified product class required by the project.

What will be the result if two lines are drawn in each row?

Using two lines per row increases the row-pipe total in this example from 960 metres to 1,920 metres. With the same route, the distribution-main and supply-line lengths do not automatically double. Measure any required changes to the branching layout separately.

Changing row direction changes the number of rows, uninterrupted lengths and the edge used for distribution. Even when the area stays the same, the coil cutting plan can change. Base the purchase on the required uninterrupted lengths as well as the total metre count.

Why might dividing the total meter by the roll length not be enough?

Four uninterrupted lines of 60 metres require 240 metres in total. With 100 metre coils, rounding 240 / 100 up to three coils is not enough: each coil yields only one uninterrupted 60 metre length. If joints are not permitted, four coils are required, leaving 160 metres in separate offcuts.

The 100 meter in this example is a hypothetical supply size, not a stock declaration. Please verify the actual roll length of each product in writing. If a line is longer than the roll, don't automatically consider adding links; The attachment method and the location where it will be used should be selected according to the project conditions.

Show waste and purchase share clearly

A user-selected purchasing allowance can be added to the measured lengths. The calculator starts at 5 percent; this is not a technical requirement. Adjust it to the cutting plan, turns and actual site conditions. Then recheck that the required uninterrupted lengths can be cut from the coils.

Offcuts from main, supply and row lines are not always interchangeable. Track them as separate stock items if diameter, material or pressure class differs. Separate the product requirements before calculating an overall cost.

Does a length calculation determine whether to use 32 mm or 10 ATÜ pipe?

No. Pipe diameter requires the flow rate to be carried, allowable loss, line length, elevation difference and actual inner diameter. The nominal size on the PE pipe, such as 32 mm, refers to the outer diameter; Verified wall thickness is required to find the inner diameter.

Pressure class is not only dependent on land size. Source pressure, pump condition, impact conditions and the technical declaration of the product must be taken into account. A pipe that is too small for a need outside the catalog range should not be recommended.

Convert calculation result to quote list

Enter your measurements in the "Area, row and length" section on the current pipe diameter calculation page. Examine the result as main line, queue line and feed; Verify that the drawing matches your field layout. Include assumptions in the PDF or written proposal summary.

The offer must include product type, diameter, class, length of each continuous piece, total meters and delivery city. Even if the area/meter calculation is completed, do not present a system whose hydraulic suitability has not been separately verified as an application project.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many square metres are in 1 decare (dönüm)?

This calculation uses 1 decare (dönüm) = 1,000 m². Measure the actual plot dimensions and the net area to be irrigated separately.

Can I calculate pipe length from the area in decares alone?

No. At least the shape of the area or one side, row spacing, direction, and number of lines are required. Feed and main distribution are also added.

Is 1,000 metres of pipe enough for one decare?

There is no universal answer. Changing row spacing or the route can make the requirement lower or higher than 1,000 metres.

How many rows will there be in an area of 20 × 50 meters, spaced at 1 meters?

If you place the first and last row half a meter from the edge and extend the rows in the direction of 50 meters, there will be 20 rows. At different margins the number is recalculated.

Can the main line and the row line be the same pipe?

Suitability depends on hydraulic design and product data. Single diameters should not be ordered assuming they are the same.

Is a 5 percent cutting allowance mandatory?

No. This is a changeable purchasing assumption. It is determined by the actual cutting and site plan.

Are three 100 metre coils enough for four uninterrupted 60 metre lines?

Not without joints. Each 100 metre coil yields only one uninterrupted 60 metre length, so four coils are required.

Does changing row direction affect the pipe length needed?

It can affect the number of rows, piece size, distribution line and cutting plan. The two aspects should be compared with the drawing and the parts list.

Can I select an ATÜ class from the field area in decares?

Field area does not determine the ATÜ class. Operating pressure, elevation, pump characteristics and product conditions must be assessed.

Does this calculation replace an irrigation design?

No. It is a geometric pipe-length and purchasing plan. Pump selection, flow, pressure losses and irrigation design require separate assessment.
