Hose Size Guide: What Do 1/2, 3/4 and 1″ Mean?
Understanding Hose Sizes
Half-inch (1/2") equals 12.7 mm; three-quarter-inch (3/4") equals 19.05 mm; and one-inch (1") equals 25.4 mm. These are exact inch-to-millimetre conversions. The actual hose internal diameter depends on product tolerances. The nominal size alone does not determine the outside diameter or tap thread.

Inches to Millimeters Conversion Table
| Inch size | Common expression | Mathematical equivalent (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | Half-inch | 12.7 |
| 5/8" | — | 15.875 |
| 3/4" | Three quarters | 19.05 |
| 1" | One-inch | 25.4 |
| 1 1/4" | — | 31.75 |
| 1 1/2" | — | 38.1 |
1 1/4" and 1 1/2" are different sizes. Do not treat this conversion table as a measured internal diameter for a particular product. Use its markings, technical data sheet or a suitable calliper measurement.
Inner diameter, outer diameter and tap thread are not the same thing
Hose flow calculations use the actual internal diameter. PE pipe sizes such as 25 mm usually identify outside diameter; wall thickness is needed to determine the bore. An inch size on a fitting may instead be a nominal thread designation. Do not assume that a 1" hose, 25 mm PE pipe and a one-inch threaded fitting connect directly to each other.
How to Choose the Right Size?
- Length and flow: Measure the route, establish the sprinkler or nozzle flow requirement and check the available water supply. Do not choose a diameter from garden area alone.
- Link: Check the thread of the tap and the actual inner/outer diameter of the hose separately. Verify the range supported by the clamp or quick coupler.
- Working condition: Make sure that the pressure, temperature and intended use are suitable for the product series. Do not use a garden hose in place of a vacuum or high-pressure washer line.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many millimetres is 1/2" hose?
The half-inch size, 1/2", converts to 12.7 mm. On a hose, the label describes a nominal internal-diameter class; the actual bore depends on product tolerances. Check the measured internal and outside diameters when selecting a connector.
What is the difference between 3/4 hose and 1" hose?
The three-quarter-inch size, 3/4", equals 19.05 mm; one inch, 1", equals 25.4 mm. At the same flow rate and length, a larger actual bore reduces friction loss. The resulting increase in water delivery cannot be stated as a universal percentage without knowing the water source, fittings and line length.
What size hose should be chosen for garden irrigation?
Do not choose the size based on the size of the garden alone. The flow rate that the faucet can provide, hose length, irrigation head and connection dimensions are evaluated together. Compare half-inch, three quarter and one-inch options under the same usage conditions; Select the compatible series that provides the required flow rate.
How does hose size affect water flow rate?
At the same flow rate and length, a smaller internal diameter increases water velocity and friction loss. Diameter alone cannot determine litres per minute: inlet pressure, length, elevation and fitting losses also matter. A larger hose does not increase the capacity of the water source.
How to measure hose size?
After turning off the water and relieving the pressure, measure the internal clearance at the uncrushed end of the hose with a caliper. Take measurements from several directions without squeezing the body; Also record the outer diameter for connection selection. Compare with the nominal size and technical sheet on the product.
What is the 1 1/4 hose used for?
The nominal size 1 1/4" converts to 31.75 mm and differs from 1 1/2". Use it on a water-transfer line only after confirming the product’s pressure rating, material suitability and connections. A suitable diameter alone does not make a garden hose safe for pump suction or vacuum service.
How many millimetres is a 1" hose?
The Turkish trade term “bir parmak” means a nominal 1" hose size, equivalent to 25.4 mm. The actual bore can vary within manufacturing tolerances. It does not imply direct compatibility with a one-inch threaded fitting or PE pipe with a 25 mm outside diameter.
What is the inner diameter of the 3/4 hose?
The nominal size 3/4", or three-quarter inch, converts to 19.05 mm. Confirm the actual hose bore in its technical data or by measurement. For a tap connection, also check the thread designation and the range supported by the hose adapter.
What diameter should the 50 meter hose be?
There is no single diameter for 50 meters that is valid in all conditions. Depending on the desired flow rate, inlet pressure, head and elevation difference, half-inch, three quarter or one-inch options are evaluated. Larger inner diameter can be compared to reduce the loss in long line; but it alone will not solve the poor water supply.
How many mm is suitable for the balcony hose?
A half-inch (1/2") hose may suit a short balcony watering run. Suitability depends on the tap adapter, required flow, route and storage conditions. Avoiding unnecessary length and ensuring a watertight connection are as important as choosing the diameter.
Is the inner or outer diameter of the hose important?
Flow calculations use the actual internal diameter. A hose-tail connector must match the bore, while an external connector or clamp also depends on outside diameter and wall thickness. PE pipe is generally identified by outside diameter and threaded fittings by nominal thread size; these measurements are not interchangeable.
Do soft garden hoses and braided hoses use the same sizes?
Different series can share a nominal inch size, but their actual internal diameter, outside diameter and wall thickness still need checking. Marketing labels such as “silikonlu” or “braided” alone do not establish a pressure rating. Compare verified product data and intended service conditions.
What does a hose adapter do?
An adapter provides the required connection between a hose, tap or different fitting types. Check nominal thread size and thread type at the threaded end, and the supported hose diameters at the hose end. Its pressure rating and material must also suit the system.
Which faucet does the 1" hose fit on?
1" hose cannot be directly connected to any faucet just by looking at the size in the name. The thread type and size of the faucet and the required fitting or quick connector on the hose side are determined separately. The same control is made at the pump outlet; Forced passing is not a compatibility test.
What size hose is used with a garden tap?
“Tap hose” does not identify one standard diameter. Half-inch and three-quarter-inch options are selected to suit the tap connection, required flow and hose length. When ordering, specify the nominal hose size, length and adapter details.
